How to start to use my Isis Breast Pump?
- Before using your pump the first time, follow these instructions:
- Wash every aspect which has a mild soap. Avoid antibacterial soaps and harsh cleaners which could modify the plastic leave a residue.
- Sterilize your pump before use. The various components of your respective pump could be sterilized by either boiling them for ten mins in sanitized water or with the Avent Express Electric or Express Microwave Steam Sterilizers.
- Assemble the pump good instructions.
- Check to ensure that the prongs from the star valve are facing up toward the funnel piece.
- Securely attach the silicone diaphragm and petal massager to the funnel by running your fingers over the entire rim with the diaphragm and also over the petal massager.
- Begin pumping by rapidly compressing the pump handle to stimulate let-down. This mimics how your baby nurses. Once you have achieved let-down, a stream of milk will flow in the funnel.
- Carry on and hold the handle down so long as your let-down remains strong.
- If the funnel starts to fill with milk, or your milk flow actually starts to slow, release the handle briefly allowing the pump to empty the expressed milk in the bottle.
- Continue this process until your breast is emptied completely.
With the Isis Breast Pump, can I express milk into all Avent bottles, nursers, and cups?

I don’t have an Avent Isis Breast Pump. Can I use another breast pump to express milk into Avent Bottles, VIA nursers and Magic Cups?
- Yes. Avent offers a Conversion Kit that you can use to attach almost any breast pump to the Avent storage and feeding system so you can express milk directly into Avent Bottles and Magic Cups. However, if you use the Isis Breast Pump, you won’t need the Conversion Kit.
I’m having trouble getting milk with the Isis Breast Pump. What should I do?
Difficulties in expressing milk may occur:
- If the pump is assembled incorrectly. Check the instructions to make sure that the prongs of the star valve are facing up into the funnel piece, and the silicone diaphragm and petal massager are securely attached.
- If you’re having trouble achieving let-down. Once let-down is achieved, milk flows quickly and effortlessly.
The following tips can help facilitate let-down:
- Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can relax while pumping.
- Gently massage your breast with your hand for approximately 1-2 minutes prior to pumping.
- Position the Isis Breast Pump so it is centered over your nipple.
- Rapidly compress the pump handle to initiate your let-down reflex. This mimics how your baby nurses. Once you have achieved let-down, a stream of milk will flow into the funnel.
- Continue to hold the handle down for as long as your let-down remains strong.
- When the funnel starts to fill with milk, or your milk flow starts to slow down, release the handle briefly to allow the pump to drain the expressed milk into the bottle.
- Repeat this process until your breast is emptied completely.
There is no suction when I pump. What should I do?
A lack of suction may occur:
- If the pump needs to be washed. All parts of the Isis Breast Pump need to be washed well with warm, soapy water by hand or in the dishwasher on the top rack. The parts of your pump can also be sterilized by either boiling them for ten minutes in distilled water or by using the Avent Express Electric or Express Microwave Steam Sterilizers.
- If the pump is assembled incorrectly. Check the instructions to make sure that:
- The prongs of the star valve are facing up into the funnel piece and not down into the bottle.
- The petal massager is flush against the milk funnel, and the diaphragm is fastened tightly. Run your fingers around these pieces to make them tight. Any air getting into these areas will affect the pump’s performance.
- Be careful not to overtighten the funnel onto the adapter. This may cause the plastic to crack and lose suction.
How often should I replace the silicone parts of the Isis Breast Pump?
- The silicone parts will eventually wear out due to use and cleaning, and will need to be replaced. If you notice the pump is no longer performing effectively, replace the parts with the spares you received in the original package.
How can I order replacement parts?
- Replacement parts are available only through direct order from Avent.
How long can breast milk be stored?
- The length of time that freshly expressed breast milk can be stored depends on where it is kept. Here are some guidelines:
- Room Temperature: 3 to 4 hours
- Refrigerator: up to 3 days
- Freezer: up to 3 months
- Freezer to Fridge: thawed breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours
- Breast milk should never be re-frozen
